An expert system for planning and designing dairy farms in hot climates CIGR Journal
Mohamed Samer; Cairo University, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Agricultural Engineering; Mohamed Hatem; Hartmut Grimm; Reiner Doluschitz; Thomas Jungbluth.
Eleven simulation models were developed to plan and design several dairy farm facilities.  Subsequently, an electronic spark map (decision tree) was developed for each simulation model, and then the simulation models were integrated into the relevant spark maps.  Afterwards, C# language (C Sharp), which is an object-oriented programming language, was used to develop an expert system via the simulation models and the electronic spark maps.  The developed expert system is able to plan and design several dairy farm facilities, e.g. housing system (corrals system), shade structure and roof material, concrete base, cooling system, milking parlour, forage storage, and manure handling system.  Subsequently, it plans the farmstead layout, and it leads to implement...

COMPUTATIONAL ANALYSIS OF LOAD VENTILATION IN BROILER TRANSPORT REA
Pinheiro,Daniel G.; Machado,Nítalo A. F.; Barbosa Filho,José A. D.; Silva,Iran J. O. Da.
ABSTRACT The characterization of ventilation during the transport of broiler chickens is essential for identifying and characterizing the potential problems of a convective heat flow and its effects on the welfare and the health and production conditions of the chickens. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ventilation patterns in two layout models of a live transport load: conventional (LC) and alternative (LA) with spacers placed between the chicken transport crates. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and wind tunnel tests were performed using small scale models. The results showed that the use of spacers between crates (LA model) modified the ventilation patterns and increased the wind circulation between crates. However, wind...

Defining upper critical temperatures for an effective climate control to reduce heat stress CIGR Journal
Sanz, Salvador Calvet.
The definition of homeotherm animal responses to temperature has traditionally based on metabolic and thermal physiology studies. The thermoneutral zone is defined as the range of ambient temperature within which metabolic rate is at a minimum, and within which temperature regulation is achieved by non-evaporative physical processes alone. As temperature raises, animals the upper critical temperature is reached, which is the ambient temperature above which thermoregulatory evaporative heat loss processes of a resting thermoregulating animal are recruited. These temperatures depend on a variety of factors including animal species and breed, age, adaptation or animal status, among others. These are influenced by other environmental conditions such as...

Determination of piglets’ rectal temperature and respiratory rate through skin surface temperature under climatic chamber conditions REA
Mostaço,Gustavo M.; Miranda,Késia O. da S; Condotta,Isabella C. F. da S; Salgado,Douglas D’Alessandro.
ABSTRACT In animal farming, an automatic and precise control of environmental conditions needs information from variables derived from the animals themselves, i.e. they act as biosensors. Rectal temperature (RT) and respiratory rate (RR) are good indicators of thermoregulation in pigs. Since there is a growing concern on animal welfare, the search for alternatives to measure RT has become even more necessary. This research aimed to identify the most adequate body surface areas, on nursery-phase pigs, to take temperature measurements that best represent the correlation of RT and RR. The main experiment was carried out in a climate chamber with five 30-day-old littermate female Landrace x Large White piglets. Temperature conditions inside chamber were varied...

ELECTRONIC MONITORING SYSTEM FOR MEASURING HEART RATE AND SKIN TEMPERATURE IN SMALL RUMINANTS REA
Costa,Daniel dos S.; Turco,Silvia H. N.; Ramos,Rodrigo P.; Silva,Flaviane M. F. M.; Freire,Murilo S..
Abstract The electronic monitoring of physiological responses is essential for managing animal production systems considering market demands for animal welfare. The objective of this study was to design, build, and test an electronic monitoring system, with recording and wireless transmission capability, for measuring the heart rate and skin temperature in small ruminants. The system had two components: a mobile base unit, mounted on the animal under study, and a fixed base unit. Wireless communication between the mobile and fixed units was performed using a Xbee Series 2 radio frequency transceiver whereas data were recorded and transferred to a secure digital card in the mobile unit. The device was mounted in Santa Inês crossbred sheep using reference...
